About the Author

David Swenson began the practice of yoga in 1969 at the age of 13. He found Ashtanga in 1973 through David Williams. In 1974 K. Pattabhi Jois made his first trip to the US and David began studies directly with him at that time. He then traveled to Mysore, India in 1977 and learned the entire system in it''s original form. David is recognized today as one of the foremost authorities of Ashtanga Yoga.

Bought this book for my yoga teacher training as it was recommended as the "bible of Ashtanga yoga" which I can confirm. The postures are broken down nicely, step by step and David offers lots of modification for the beginner and a more modern approach to the series, which I really like. At the end of the book there are short forms of the primary series to suit those who may not have time to dedicate a full 2 hours or more to practicing each day. This actually came in handy when I started teaching, as I only have a 75 minutes class which is not enough time to guide students through the full primary series. If you are looking for a practice manual that focuses on the asanas, inhales and exhales in each part of the postures, and offers nice modifications, I highly recommend this book.
If you are looking for a deeper analysis of all the asanas, the vinyasa count as well as some Ashtanga yoga philosophy, I would recommend checking out Gregor Maehle''s "Ashtanga Yoga: Practice & Philosophy" which breaks the postures down on an anatomical level and has an in depth commentary/translation of the yoga sutras by Patanjali. Also Pattabi Jois'' "Yoga Mala" will give you a deeper insight as to the benefits of each posture as he learned them from Krishnamacharya and talks more about the therapeutic benefits of each of the asanas.

I''ve been practicing ashtanga for years now and I still reference this book. David has one of the most approachable, easy to follow and laid back approaches to ashtanga. I just love how he offers reasonable and accessible accommodations to all postures in primary and intermediate series, which is sometimes considered a "no no" in some ashtanga schools of thought. I personally prefer David''s approach and do not endorse a 6 days a week of primary series until you''ve "mastered" it which could take years approach. Our bodies need variety and the front body openings offered in second series. And besides, lets face it you''ll encounter even 3rd series postures in a regular general ed vinyasa class and have probably done them just fine in those classes. Sorry for the long digression- basically I love David''s approach and explanations of everything from the breath bandhas and drishti''s to the unique vinyasas of ashtanga all the way through to breaking down even the most challenging asanas. This is a must, especially for home practitioners who can''t get to a shala for mysore style.

I am pursuing ashtanga yoga quite seriously, and this is the only book out there that is really helpful as a self-guide when you want to practice on your own. My issue is that I don''t always remember the order of the postures and all the things you need to pay attention to when I practice on my own. This manual is great for the following reasons:

- It''s a binder book so pages are easy to flip
- Each position in the series is shown visually in a variety of levels: the final level to aim for, and the "easier" levels to aim for if you are not there yet. This makes the book very safe and appropriate for beginners. And also less discouraging.
- In addition to the full photos of the above, you get step by step procedures and transitions, as well as guidelines on what to work on while you are in the position.

Downsides: I wish it was less heavy and came in color. Ideally there should be a Kindle version for traveling and audio playlist for each position, so that you can practice on the go. Right now the book is too heavy to travel with.

David''s book was instrumental as I went through Ashtanga Teacher Training. It provides the ideal expression of each asana, along with modifications to make it accessible for everyone. There are clear, step by step instructions to link movement to breath and explain the vinyasa transitions. He also includes helpful tips and explanations. David''s attitude is one of inclusiveness, to help you can make the practice your own. In my view, it''s the best book from which to begin Ashtanga primary series, or to expand your knowledge as you pursue the intermediate series.

This book is excellent. The main reason to get this one over some others would be the spiral binding, which makes it more practical to use as you practice, the modifications, which are clear and practical, as well as the distinct attention spent on the vinyasas. There is a brief mention of the philosophy, and good tips as well. I also have kinos book, but for my purposes, I think I prefer this one to hers. It would pair well with her cards. The Sanskrit counts aren’t in this book or kinos cards, though. For that, you’d want kinos book.

This book is often reviewed as a sort of “ashtanga bible”. It takes, however, many liberties, and its stated purpose is to facilitate a personalized practice, rather than provide a reference of the ashtanga method. Those genuinely interested in the ashtanga method should therefore look for guidance elsewhere and approach this book with the understanding that it was not meant to be accurate and faithful to the ashtanga method. For one, it does not provide vinyasa count, or precise vinyasa by vinyasa instruction like other texts that aim to be accurate. Even where vinyasa counts might be guessed from the description, they are often incorrect, which, for the serious student renders this book next to useless, if not actually counterproductive. The author, however, is hardly to blame; he freely admits to having re-interpreted and paraphrased the method. The blame lies with those who misconstrue this book as a reference text and so help sending beginners down the wrong path.

This book is amazing. It takes a little while to get your head round some of the words, but you can always reference back and it has translations underneath. I really enjoyed initially reading through this book before putting some of the techniques and postures into practice, i found that I learnt a lot about the nature of yoga and its benefits as well as the safest way to practice it. The book offers numerous postures and with each posture it offers different levels of difficulty, meaning that you can build you strength and confidence slowly. The book offers routines of varying time scales, however this book has helped me to construct my own routines to suit my needs. I would recommend this book to everyone wanting to learn ashtanga yoga but lacks confidence on where to start.

Svenson is probably the most known modern Asthanga teacher who lives in the West - he is an institution for this style of yoga. His book, therefore is a great source of learning and inspiration, Explains the basic, intermediate and advanced asanas and sequences. Good pictures, clear organization of the book, plus it is published in the form of a ''''ring-binder'''' spine, so you can turn pages easily when looking at the book and doing the pose. Very good idea as anyone who ever tried to read and practice at the same time knows.
