Description

Product Description

Based on the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL), Feasting on the Word Worship Companion: Liturgies for Year A, Volume 2 provides liturgical pieces used in preparing for worship. Written and compiled by an ecumenical team of 11 seasoned liturgy writers, this resource offers a multitude of poetic prayers and responsive readings for all parts of worship and is meant to complement existing denominational resources. In addition, the weekly entries include questions for reflection and household prayers for morning and evening that are drawn from the lectionary, allowing churches to include them in their bulletin for parishioners to use throughout the week.

During times of the year when two different tracks of Old Testament texts are offered by the RCL, this resource offers an entire set of materials for each track. Also, a CD-ROM is included with each volume that enables planners to easily cut and paste relevant readings, prayers, and questions into worship bulletins.

Liturgy writers include the following:

 • Kimberly L. Clayton, Director of Contextual Education, Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur, Georgia; Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
 • David Gambrell, Associate for Worship in the Office of Theology and Worship, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Louisville, Kentucky; Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
 • Daniel M. Geslin, Pastor, Sixth Avenue United Church of Christ, Denver, Colorado; United Church of Christ
 • Kimberly Bracken Long, Associate Professor of Worship, Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur, Georgia; Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
 • L. Edward Phillips, Associate Professor of Worship and Liturgical Theology, Candler School of Theology, Atlanta, Georgia; United Methodist Church
 • Melinda Quivik, Liturgical Scholar, Houghton, Michigan; Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
 • Carol L. Wade, Dean of Christ Church Cathedral, Lexington, Kentucky; Episcopal Church

If you''re a lectionary preacher, the Feasting On the Word series is a must-have resource. I was fortunate to receive the commentary series as a Christmas gift while I was in seminary - a part of my resource budget every year for the last three years now has been dedicated to picking up the worship companion resources that WJK has published since then. The authors in the worship companion books go to great lengths to write liturgical elements that incorporate and embrace the lectionary texts each week, and it''s a wonderful tool to have at your disposal for any pastor who wants to ensure that they are crafting a service and liturgy that maintain thematic elements of the scriptures throughout.

For each Sunday of the Revised Common Lectionary, the Feasting worship companions offer a Call to Worship, Call to Confession, Prayer of Confession, Declaration of Forgiveness, Prayer of the Day, Prayer for Illumination, Prayers of Intercession, Invitation to the Offering, Prayer of Thanksgiving/Dedication, Charge and Blessing to use and incorporate into your weekly services. At the same time, the companion also offers prayers for weekly use in your own household in the morning and evening, as well as a question or two for reflection throughout the week. I use this reflection question at the beginning of each week to help start my congregation in possible discussion of the upcoming texts, but I also find that it helps me shape my own exploration of the texts as I go into sermon preparation.

One of the nice things about these companions is that during ordinary time, they provide liturgical material for both tracks of the lectionary - both semi-continuous and complementary. They also provide prayers of thanksgiving, thanksgiving for baptism, and other liturgical options that you might need for specific festival days and celebrations, which is always a nice further resource to have.

I look forward to seeing what other materials Feasting On the Word releases!

I now own all of the Worship Companion series - 6 books in all. What I really love is that during the Pentecost season, there are liturgical options whether you follow the regular lectionary or the complementary series. These are thoughtful, well-written, and theologically sound liturgies. The language is simple yet profound. Children like these liturgies because they understand almost all the words. I would not hesitate to recommend these to anyone who works with a Christian church.

Great resource for lectionary bulletin building
Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2014
Great resource for lectionary bulletin building. Often you get two choices of material...call to worship / prayer of confession / offertory / benediction / and a little more. A great compliment to the "Feasting" commentaries.

This is a great tool for alternative prayers for worship. It has a slightly more social justice slant than our denominations traditional hymnal.

This could prove to be a most useful aid for those charged with leading worship on a regular basis in settings where the congregation is accustomed to sharing in a variety of responses. The material is strongly Biblical and at the same time succeeds in striking a contemporary note. On almost every page there is a thought-provoking image or a memorable phrase.
