I have a 14.5 year old American Pit Bull Terrier with limited back leg use due to old ACL injuries. She''s also been struggling with urinary incontinence most of her life and needs to wear diapers.
Because of her breed''s build, it''s difficult to find something that fits her body type and adjustability is very important. With her age and limited mobility, she is a lot thinner but I''m still finding it difficult to find a good fit for her. I have a "Walkabout" neoprene lift harness that is amazing in many ways, but it never quite fit properly. The leg holes fit, but I could never get the waist piece small enough. A smaller size would fit her waist, but there''s no way she could get her thighs in them. That one is meant to be worn most of the time and it is very comfortable. It also has a long, padded strap so you can go for walks or just to potty with them and you get to stand up straight. It is still usable, but she''s lost more weight and now the waist strap is just huge, I''m trying to make it work by shoving towels in it, but now it slips off of her all the time, she''s peeing on it, and it''s just too much for constant use.
Decided to find another one that was more adjustable and possibly easier to get on and off. (Walkabout is step-in style and that''s hard when your dog can''t really stand.)
According to the weight range, she''s a Medium. She''s 45 pounds. I knew she was at the bottom end of the Medium''s weight range. Her waist is 19-20 inches. Our problem is usually that she has to go with the larger size if she''s on the fence between with her body shape. This time though, I think she could have gone with the small. I saw the pic of of a dachshund wearing the small and thought, "No way will that fit my pittie." I may order the small to see if the fit is better, but the medium may still work.
The strap that can attach to a harness is awesome - I have it attached to her regular harness that has a ring between her shoulders. It really does keep it on. Without it, it would fall off my dog right away. I had to adjust it to the smallest possible size and it''s still a bit loose, but usable and it still keeps it on her so that''s a win.
The belly strap is too big, I have it at the smallest setting and it''s just huge on her. Without the harness strap, there is no way this would stay on her waist. I removed the hard panel for males (it''s a Velcro pocket) and kept the strap buckled in because I want her waist to help supporr when lifting.
The legs - incredible adjustability!! It could go quite small if it had to. I didn''t have to make them much smaller though, so I would be a little hesitant about this fitting dogs up to 70lbs. There''s the issue I have - the rest of it is too big but the legs fit and I didn''t have to make them much smaller. I don''t know that a Small could accommodate her thighs.
My dog seems to like this lift better than the much bulkier Walkabout, even though the Walkabout seems a lot more comfortable. A lot less stuff between her legs and hanging over her.
She can pee and poop outside without getting any on the lift. Diaper changes are a lot easier.
I put it on her while she was laying down, making it a lot easier to take it off at night and be able to put it back on her without having to lift her myself.
Very pleased even with a little fit difficulties. It still lifts her, she seems comfortable with it. I do wish it had a longer handle or even a ring to attach a leash to in order to stand up straight. I''ll probably loop my leash around it for that.
I''ll update if I purchase the Small.
