Excellent book for a beginner succulent lover. The identification section is great. It gives you a clear, gorgeous photo of each type along with a brief description. What I found most helpful though is that for each variety, the author gives you a list telling the mature size, water & sun needs, hardiness zone, & also what other variety it pairs well with. There is a lot of easy to follow guidance for choosing arrangement types and how to make them, best ways to propogate and general care. Although a lot of this info could be found online, it is so much easier to have it all in one place. Also, I read so many online articles that just left me confused. Not so with this book. It is very informative and easy to understand.

So disappointed. I vetted so many succulent books before I chose this one. I wanted lots & lots of great pictures of succulents with names and actual care info for growing these beauties indoors, by a window, under lights. What’s offered here are the same scampy details amazon or plant tags provide,e.g: needs sun, indirect sun or sun & shade; good drainage & succulent soil.

This a 275 page book & almost 100 pages are devoted to how to hot glue succulents into door wreaths, centerpieces, etc. I have no desire to do that.If I wanted a book on how to decorate w/ succulents, I would have bought one.

About 15 of the 275 page book are actual cactus, not succulents.

That leaves 160 pages left for succulent ID & care.

The photos of succulents are gorgeous. And these are wasted too.
The decorating with succulent section features pictures of bouquets, wreaths, bowls & uses many different varieties of succulents as examples. The front section of the book goes into some detail re: propagation & uses pictures of various succs to illustrate techniques.

LABEL THE NAME OF EACH PLANT WHEN POSSIBLE SOMEWHERE ON THE SAME PAGE.

.I’ve been gardening for many years & I’m now growing over 40 different plants under grow lights. So many of them look very similar & some of the names of the plants sound similar.

SO HELP US TO KNOW THE NAMES OF OUR SUCCULENTS! NOT HOW TO HOT GLUE SUCCULENTS ONTO A PICTURE FRAME!

I assume that if you want to bring out the red & blue in your succs., give them more sun. But does author identify the other stressors - pot size, withholding water, etc.

Did you know the correct size pot for a happy succulent is leaving space of at least a half inch to the edge and no more than inch? I didn’t know that til recently and I sure as heck didn’t learn it from this book.

Included are some random photos I had on file of my guys in my photo library. They weren’t taken for show & maybe may have some boo boos in them that I’ll catch later and simply plotz with shame. All the photos are taken with my phone, all natural light; no filters or bunny ears. I just wanted to show you all I know of whence I speak, although I’m not sure I spelled the word “whence” correctly.

I recently got in to the succulent hobby and I’ve been looking for a book that talks about everything a beginner would need to know from watering, light, propagation, has 100’s of plants for beginners and tells how to take care of the plant. It has different stuff you can do with succulent and cacti. It literally explains everything and in lamins terms. Very to understand but it isn’t “kiddy” like. Beautiful pictures and very nice book. I have several books on succulents (been trying to find a good book) and this one is for sure the best out there!! And I would say it’s not just for beginners. It’s for anyone that loves succulents and cacti. It has info everyone needs to know and how to do things and explains so well.

I was torn between getting this book and the DK practical succulent and cactus guide. The first half of the book is how to propagate, create soil ratios, watering, and many project. The last half of the book is VERY BASIC succulent info. That literally just states the name, height, sun requirements by an icon chart, water (most just say "average") zoning, and one other succulent they pair well with - by their scientific name. This book DOES NOT go into depth/nore discusses the specific vatiety. I want to know how haworthias, crassulas, Echeverias, ect need specific requirements. The Appendix is broken down by succulent color, and height. Very bummed this book cover also came curled up from being in the box. I feel this book makes for a better idea/coffee table book than an actual care reference. Beautiful pictures tho. Wish I could upload pictures, it would have saved me from buying this book.

This book pretty much covers everything you''ll need to know if you''re getting started in the "succulent world". For years I resisted buying succulents but, when it became apparent that I couldn''t grow what I wanted in pots on my front deck, I capitulated and bought a bunch of succulents. Of course, I knew NOTHING about them so bought this book. Now I''m propagating my own plants, have learned to identify Echeveria from a Haworthia, and have learned that most succulents grow well in the sun -- something I should have known before I bought all those sun-loving succulents for my shady deck. This book is well laid out, very well written and has a great "encyclopedia" of many types of succulents. If you only buy one book when you''re starting out, make it this one.

Fall in love with succulents!

Succulent Wreath

A succulent wreath makes a great addition to any door, room, or wall. Even though it's living, you'll find it is easy to maintain and doesn't require much attention. The types of succulents you'll choose will have a large impact on the look and style of your wreath. You can combine a variety of brightly colored succulents in a range of shapes and textures for a bold look, or select succulents of similar colors and textures to create a more uniform piece. Either way, a succulent wreath is sure to be an impressive addition to your décor.

Living Picture

There's something appealing about plants growing vertically rather than in a pot. Succulents do especially well in vertical arrangements, so they are a popular choice for creating living pictures. A living picture can cover an entire wall, or it can be something smaller and more personal. If you're growing indoors, small and personal is a great option. Find a color palette of succulents that you like, or choose a variety of shapes and textures. Rosettes are a popular choice for living pictures, but branchy, trailing, and even somewhat tall succulents work too.

Strawberry Pot

If you're looking for something a little different than the typical ceramic pot, try a strawberry pot! These pots come in a variety of sizes and colors and have "pockets" poking out of the sides. Not only do you have plants at the top, but along the sides of the planter as well. Succulents work well in these pockets because they don't need a lot of space for roots. This planter is a simple way to add interest to your succulent garden.

Getting to know succulents

You've seen succulents in magazines, on your Instagram feed, in bouquets, and in gorgeous container arrangements; they're everywhere. Maybe you're intrigued by their bright colors and unusual shapes. Maybe you've heard they're easy to take care of: "anyone can keep them alive" and "they're foolproof." Now you want some of your own, but you're not sure where to start. This book will get you headed in the right direction. There are so many things you can do with these amazing plants! You'll love deciding which plants to get and how to arrange them.

As easy as it gets

Selecting and arranging succulents

One of the best things about succulents is that you can pair almost any two varieties and they will look great together. With so many different colors and textures, it's fun to experiment with new combinations. Selecting a beautiful container can be just as fun as selecting the succulents.

Graptoveria - 'Candle Blue'

One of the great things about this plant is that it maintains its color pretty well in shade. It puts off new offsets very quickly and forms small clumps.

Graptosedum - 'California Sunset'

Graptosedum - 'California Sunset' is a great variety to use in arrangements. Its reddish hue contrasts nicely with the more common green succulents.

Decorated Napkin Ring

What better way to dress up a table setting than with succulents? Whether you're planning an event or just want to make dinner a little more special, these simple succulent-decorated napkin rings will add a touch of elegance. This tutorial shows you how to create your own napkin ring using wire and floral tape, but you can also decorate a premade wooden ring. Both options are easy to do and look great.
